Why Function Comes First at Gentle Roots — Not Fragrance or Fluff
When you build something by hand, it carries a piece of your story.
At Gentle Roots, every jar or bottle crafted with the belief that skincare should serve your skin, not marketing trends.
From the very beginning, I made a conscious decision to prioritise function and skin health over the kind of synthetic fragrances or heavy essential oil blends that can irritate and overwhelm the skin, especially for children. As I shared in an interview with Davina Catt:
“I’ve chosen to focus on function and skin health rather than chasing strong synthetic fragrances or essential heavy oil formulations that might smell nice but do more harm than good.”
That philosophy runs through the entire range, from our Tallow-Based Face & Body Balm, available in a soothing lavender or fragrance-free version, to our Radiance Body Oil, which comes both unscented and delicately scented with sweet orange and ylang-ylang essential oils.
It’s not always the easiest route. Choosing to keep most of our products fragrance-free can be harder to market to a world that associates “nice smell” with “good skincare.” But Gentle Roots was never about following trends - it’s about creating non-toxic skincare that nourishes all ages and skin types, even the most sensitive. Thankfully, more people are beginning to read ingredient labels, understand what’s inside their skincare, and value transparency over perfume.
Behind the Scenes at Gentle Roots
Behind every product is a hands-on, transparent process. Every ingredient is sourced from trusted UK suppliers with ethical, traceable supply chains. In my small studio, even the production process reflects this ethos, single-use plastics are replaced with reusable glass equipment, and packaging is designed to be as sustainable as possible.
When it comes to packaging our glass jars aren’t just aesthetically pleasing, they’re recyclable, protective, and reusable. They also help shield your skincare from microplastic leaching, keeping each formula as pure and non-toxic as possible from production to your skin.
Each formula is handmade in small batches, ensuring freshness, quality, and care you can feel from the moment you open the lid.
